In light of this, I’d like to outline some key things all motorbike renters should be aware of and prepared for on Samui’s roads.
Do not imitate the actions of local riders
Riding a motorbike in Koh Samui presents unique challenges due to the presence of pedestrians and animals on the roads. This can lead to unexpected situations, so it’s crucial to exercise caution.
If you’re new to Koh Samui’s roads, I strongly advise against imitating the actions of local riders, especially if you lack sufficient riding skills. Avoid overtaking on narrow roads with oncoming traffic and parked cars. Instead, stay in your lane and allow local riders to pass when safe.
Be aware of nonverbal negotiation and communication
In Koh Samui, with fewer traffic signals, drivers and riders often rely on nonverbal communication to ensure safety and avoid collisions. Eye contact, hand gestures, and subtle vehicle movements become crucial tools for negotiating right-of-way.
It’s important to note that certain signals can have context-dependent meanings. For instance, while flashing high beams or activating hazard lights with both turn signals can indicate yielding, it’s essential to assess the approaching vehicle’s speed and behavior. If they are approaching rapidly, it’s advisable to remain stationary and yield the right of way.

While some drivers or riders might react with aggression to perceived violations of unwritten rules, it is important to remain calm and polite. Instead of engaging in a confrontation, it is better to simply acknowledge the other person’s concerns and move on.
Remember, you are here to enjoy your vacation, not to get into a fight. Many other people will be more understanding and tolerant of mistakes, especially in a new environment.
